Kopsavilkums

Title: Awareness, attitudes, and experiences of lower limb injury prevention among Nākotnes league football players. Author: Kristiāna Poļakova, 4th-year Physiotherapy student, Rīga Stradiņš University. Relevance: Football is one of the most popular and at the same time one of the most injury-prone sports in terms of lower limb trauma. Muscle, ligament and joint injuries affect players of various ages. Although scientifically proven prevention strategies are available, their use at amateur and youth levels remains irregular or incomplete. Aim: To explore the awareness, attitude and personal experience of Nākotnes League football players regarding lower limb injury prevention methods, as well as to analyse their subjective opinion on the necessity of implementing and improving such measures at the team level. Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional study involved 61 voluntary Nākotnes League football players. Participants were aged between 16 and 35 years, with a mean age of 22 years. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire, distributed electronically to Nākotnes League teams, and sent individually to each player. The data were analysed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods, including percentage distributions, the Mann–Whitney U test and Kendall’s tau-b correlation coefficient. Results: The study showed that Nākotnes League football players have limited awareness of lower limb injury prevention methods, and the approaches used in daily practice are not systematic. No significant association was found between the presence of a physiotherapist in the team and players’ awareness of preventive measures (p = 0.895). Likewise, no statistically significant correlation was observed between injury experience and the opinion that prevention efforts should be improved (p = 0.125). Conclusions: Nākotnes League football players lack understanding of evidence-based prevention methods. The mere presence of a physiotherapist in the team does not indicate a higher level of awareness unless the specialist is actively involved in implementing prevention measures. Injury experience influences players’ attitudes, and respondents acknowledge the need to better integrate prevention into training routines. Keywords: lower limb injuries, football/soccer players, prevention, awareness, attitudes, experiences, injury risks, Nākotnes League.
