Abstract
Background: Since ankle injuries are one of the most common musculoskeletal injuries in athletes and sedentary persons, early diagnosis and treatment are very crucial for a good prognosis. This comprises careful physical examination and the selection of the most appropriate imaging modality. This thesis aims to collect information on newly published scientific articles and explore radiology's role in diagnosing acute ankle fractures and the advantages and disadvantages of the mentioned imaging techniques. Methods: The RSU e-library has been used to gain access to ScienceDirect, ProQuest, British Medical Journal, and Clinical Key. Articles newer than 2018 have been collected by searching related keywords on acute ankle fractures and the relevant imaging techniques and have been analyzed. References older than 2018 have been used when no more recent studies or guidelines have been found. Results: The data and sources I worked with basically all concluded that with greater advantages, like higher sensitivity and specificity, resolution, 3D imaging, and so on, also come more disadvantages, a higher amount of ionizing radiation or longer waiting time and examination time. Conclusion: We have to see radiology as a multimodal approach with all its pitfalls until we find a modality that comprises excellent resolution for all tissues, 3D reconstruction, and minimal radiation exposure.
