Kopsavilkums
1. Teorētiski definēt emocijas un to reprezentāciju mākslas kino.
The author of the bachelor’s thesis is Regnārs Rudus. Title of the thesis: Representation of violence and suffering in the Latvian war films “Akmens un šķembas” and “Dvēseļu putenis”. The total length of the bachelor’s thesis is 61 pages. The thesis includes 30 images, 4 tables, 53 sources, of which 51 are in foreign languages, and 4 appendices. The aim of the study is to examine the representation of violence and suffering in the Latvian war films “Akmens un šķembas” and “Dvēseļu putenis”, to determine whether and how this depiction is related to specific cinematographic framing techniques. The hypothesis of the research states that there is a statistically significant correlation between the representation of violence and suffering and the framing techniques used in both films. To achieve the objective of the study, the following tasks were defined: 1. to theoretically define emotions and their representation in art cinema. 2. to describe the role of shot composition in cinema as a technical code linked to perception psychology, music, verbal cues, violence, suffering, and situational dynamics. 3. to analyse the representation of violence and suffering in artistic films using quantitative data analysis. 4. to carry out statistical analysis using SPSS to test the hypotheses. 5. to formulate conclusions based on the obtained data and theoretical insights about the representation of violence and suffering in both films. The thesis applies quantitative content analysis, using SPSS statistical software to evaluate 1224 coded shots according to specific analytical criteria. The empirical part includes data processing for each film, analysis of visual and emotional content, and the testing of six null hypotheses. The thesis is structured in two main parts: the theoretical section analyses concepts of emotion and suffering in film theory, with a focus on the function of shot composition, while the empirical section presents data processing and interpretation. The analysis reveals that “Dvēseļu putenis” employs a direct and emotionally explicit approach using consistent close-up shots and a steady editing rhythm. In contrast, “Akmens un šķembas” relies on a more reserved, symbolic, and indirect style with longer shots and less frequent visualisation of violence. It is concluded that the depiction of suffering in cinema functions both as an emotional and stylistic tool that structures the narrative and shapes viewer empathy. The research confirms several statistically significant differences, indicating consciously applied cinematographic strategies in the directorial approaches of both films.
