ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION: Pesticides play a crucial role in modern agriculture, protecting crops from pests like insects, fungi, and weeds. Despite their widespread use, pesticides raise significant health and environmental concerns, especially for agricultural workers who experience regular exposure. Pesticides can be classified by target, with insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and rodenticides each presenting specific risks. For example, organophosphates and pyrethroids target insect nervous systems but may cause neurotoxicity and respiratory issues in humans. Herbicides like glyphosates and atrazine target plants, yet some may pose carcinogenic risks. Fungicides and rodenticides, likewise, carry respiratory, endocrine, and toxicological risks for workers.
AIM: This review explores the impact of pesticides on agricultural workers' respiratory health, examining conditions linked to exposure and underlying mechanisms.
OBJECTIVES: To analyze pesticide types used in agriculture, exposure pathways, and their biological effects on respiratory health. Additionally, to assess the effectiveness of protective protocols for agricultural workers.
HYPOTHESIS: Pesticide inhalation adversely impacts agricultural workers' respiratory health, increasing respiratory symptoms, reducing lung function, and leading to chronic respiratory issues compared to non-exposed populations.
RESEARCH QUESTIONS
How does long-term pesticide inhalation contribute to respiratory conditions (e.g., asthma, COPD)?
How does oxidative stress mediate pesticide-related respiratory issues?
What is the role of sunscreens in enhancing pesticide absorption and systemic toxicity?
What are the relative risks of inhalation vs. dermal absorption in respiratory and endocrine disorders?
What measures can minimize exposure and improve respiratory outcomes?
METHODOLOGY: A comprehensive review of studies from databases including Science Direct, PubMed, and The Lancet, focusing on publications (2010-2023) exploring pesticide inhalation, oxidative stress, endocrine disruption, and respiratory health impacts on agricultural workers.
RESULTS: Findings reveal that pesticide inhalation among agricultural workers leads to symptoms like coughing and throat irritation in the short term, while chronic exposure is linked to asthma, COPD, and bronchitis. Pesticides can cross the blood-air barrier, potentially causing neurotoxic, endocrine, and immune effects. The results highlight the importance of exposure duration, protective equipment, and individual vulnerability, stressing the need for stronger safety protocols to protect workers’ health.
