Kopsavilkums
Physicians are subject to high workload, and compared to many other professions, they have an increased susceptibility to Burnout syndrome, a term that has only recently developed. Chronic stress, overwork and high responsibility are only few of many factors that contribute to the exhaustion of doctors. It remains of crucial importance to emphasize the threat of burnout, and to raise its social attention in order to ensure optimal physician health, which is the corner stone of a successful patient care. Physicians are more likely to experience Burnout syndrome, compared to the general population. Emergency medicine, Oncology and Surgery are high risk specialties. Younger physicians with less work experience are particularly vulnerable. Serious negative impacts of Burnout on physicians health include cardiovascular diseases, immunological disorders, substance abuse, self-medication and suicide. Many change the profession and leave their medical career. Possible interventions should address individual as well as occupational stressors.
