Abstract
Particulate matter and nitrogen oxides are air pollutants found in ambient air, with many human and non-human activities contributing to their dispersion. Delineating the effect of particulate matter and nitrogen oxides on multiple sclerosis would prove invaluable as it can lead to prevention strategies involving exposure minimization, and thereby, perhaps decrease the burden of multiple sclerosis in the world. The focus of this research paper is to discover a potential link between particulate matter and nitrogen oxides on multiple sclerosis. This paper found that particulate matter and nitrogen oxides do contribute to the etiology, prevalence, and relapses of multiple sclerosis. Oxidative stress, disruption of the blood-brain barrier, and production of auto-aggressive T-cells were found to be the main mechanisms through which these pollutants induce inflammation and subsequent cell injury and cell death in the human body. In addition, the prevalence of multiple sclerosis and its’ relapses were found to be higher in cities with greater air pollution, in contrast to cities with lower air pollution. However, further research is needed to clearly delineate these relationships.
