Tēmas aktualitāte: ar vismaz vienu no temporomandibulārās locītavas disfunkcijas (TMD) simptomiem saskaras 40-60% no visas populācijas, kā rezultātā tiek ierobežota indivīda funkcionalitāte un dzīves kvalitāte. Stress un mutes parafunkcionālie ieradumi tiek uzskatīti par TMD attīstību ietekmējošiem faktoriem, jo to ietekmē rodas muskuļu ap žokli hiperaktivitāte un nepareizs temporomandibulārās locītavas darbības modelis. Populācija, kura ikdienā pastiprināti saskaras ar stresu ir augstskolu studenti, jo viņiem nākas tikt galā ne tikai ar mācību slodzi, bet arī ar pārmaiņām ikdienas dzīvē. Pētāmo saistību noteikšana ļaus noteikt problēmas esamību vai neesamību Latvijas studentu populācijā, jo Latvijas mērogā šī incidence nav pētīta. Papildus tam, veselības aprūpē strādājošajiem speciālistiem tiks sniegta pētījumā balstīta informācija, kas ļaus efektīvāk ārstēt TMD pacientus, ņemot vērā tās riska faktorus.
Pētījuma mērķis: noskaidrot stresa saistību ar temporomandibulārās locītavas funkciju un mutes parafunkcionālajiem ieradumiem Latvijas augstskolu studentiem.
Metodes: tika veikts vienmomenta, neeksperimentāls šķērsgriezuma pētījums, kurā piedalījās 140 pētījuma dalībnieki. Kā pētījuma instrumenti tika izmantoti – Uztvertā stresa skala, Mutes parafunkcionālo ieradumu novērtējums, Helkimo anamnēzes indekss un Helkimo klīniskās disfunkcijas indekss.
Rezultāti: 84% pētījuma dalībnieku izjuta vidēja līdz augsta līmeņa stresu, visiem pētījuma dalībniekiem bija vismaz viens mutes parafunkcionālais ieradums un 93% pētījuma dalībnieku cieta no vājas līdz akūtas TMD. Tika noteikta vāja, statistiski nozīmīga saistība starp stresu un TMD (r=0,217, p=0,010). Noteikta vāja un vidēja statistiski nozīmīga saistība starp stresu un deviņiem no mutes parafunkcionālajiem ieradumiem un vāja, statistiski nozīmīga saistība starp TMD un vienu no mutes parafunkcionālajiem ieradumiem – mūzikas instrumentu spēlēšanu, kur nepieciešama mutes vai žokļa iesaiste (r = 0,180, p = 0,033).
Secinājumi: lielākā daļa pētījuma dalībnieku, Latvijas augstskolu studentu, izjūt vidēja vai augsta līmeņa stresu un saskaras ar viegli vai mēreni izteiktiem, vai arī akūtiem TMD simptomiem. Un visiem pētījumā iesaistītajiem studentiem tika identificēts vismaz viens mutes parafunkcionālais ieradums. Latvijas studējošo populācijā noteikta stresa saistība ar deviņiem mutes parafunkcionālajiem ieradumiem un temporomandibulārās locītavas funkcijas traucējumiem, identificējot šo tēmu kā Latvijā aktuālu un sastopamu. Stress var būt kā viens no TMD attīstību un deviņu mutes parafunkcionālo ieradumu esamību ietekmējošiem riska faktoriem.
Title: the relationship between stress, temporomandibular joint function, and oral parafunctional habits among students at Latvian universities. Introduction: temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) affects 40–60% of the general population, with at least one symptom that can interfere with daily functioning and reduce quality of life. Stress and oral parafunctional habits are recognized as contributing risk factors for TMD, as they may promote hyperactivity of the masticatory muscles and abnormal joint function. Students represent a population particularly susceptible to stress due to the demands of academic workload combined with significant changes in their personal lives. This research aims to assess the prevalence of TMD symptoms among students at universities in Latvia, addressing a gap in the national literature where no prior studies on this topic have been conducted. The findings will provide healthcare professionals with evidence-based insights to improve the management of TMD, taking into account relevant psychosocial and behavioral risk factors. Aim of this study: to investigate the relationship between stress, temporomandibular joint function, and oral parafunctional habits among university students in Latvia. Research methods: this is a non-experimental, cross-sectional study with 140 research participants. Validated measurement tools were used during questionnaire data collection, including Perceived stress scale, Oral behavior checklist, Helkimo anamnestic index and Helkimo clinical dysfunction index. Results: a total of 84% of research participants reported moderate to high levels of perceived stress. All respondents exhibited at least one oral parafunctional habit, and 93% presented with mild to severe symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD). A statistically significant correlation was found between stress and TMD (r = 0.217, p = 0.010), as well as between stress and nine different oral parafunctional habits. Additionally, a significant correlation was identified between TMD and one specific oral parafunctional habit — playing a musical instrument that involves the use of the mouth or jaw (r = 0.180, p = 0.033). Conclusion: the majority of research population (students at Latvian universities) experience moderate or high levels of stress and report mild to moderate, or even acute, symptoms of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). And at least one oral parafunctional habit was identified in all participating students. The study revealed an association between stress and nine oral parafunctional habits, as well as temporomandibular joint dysfunction, highlighting this issue as common and relevant in the national context. Stress may be considered as one of the risk factors contributing to the development of TMD and the presence of the nine identified oral parafunctional habits.
