Šis literatūras apskats pēta Bacille-Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vakcīnas potenciālo lomu COVID-19 infekcijas smaguma un izplatības mazināšanā, izmantojot tās imūnmodulējošos, netiešos efektus. COVID-19 vakcīna tiek plaši lietota visā pasaulē kopš 2020. gada decembra, taču tā nenodrošina ilgtermiņa imunitāti pret COVID-19 infekciju. Ilgtermiņa imunitātes uzturēšanas izaicinājumi ir radījuši interesi par alternatīvām imunizācijas stratēģijām. Literatūras apskats sniedz informāciju par BCG vakcīnas vispārējām īpašībām un tās labvēlīgajiem netiešajiem efektiem. Tāpat tajā
aplūkoti novērojumu pētījumi par BCG vakcinācijas iespējamo ietekmi uz COVID-19. Galvenā uzmanība tomēr tiek pievērsta padziļinātai visu starptautisko nejaušināto kontrolēto pētījumu analīzei, kas publicēti laikā no 2020. gada janvāra līdz 2024. gada oktobrim un kuros tiek vērtēta BCG vakcinācijas ietekme uz COVID-19 infekciju.
This literature review investigates the potential role of the Bacille-Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine in mitigating COVID-19 infection severity and incidence through its immune- modulating off-target effects. The COVID-19 vaccine has been widely used since December 2020, but it does not provide long-term immunity against COVID-19. Challenges in sustaining long-term immunity have prompted interest in alternative immunization strategies. This review provides an overview of the general characterstics and beneficial off-target effects of the BCG vaccine. It also examines observational studies on the potential impact of BCG vaccination on COVID-19. The primary focus, however, is an in-depth analysis of all randomized controlled trials published between January 2020 and October 2024 that assess the effect of BCG vaccination on COVID-19 infection.
