Abstract
This study focuses on Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), its symptomatic manifestations and differences in symptomatic presentation depending on gender, its comorbidities, the long-term outcomes that arise upon ADHD persistence and its impact on occupational health. The aim of this work is to gather information that reenforces the hypothesis that ADHD has different symptomatic manifestations and different severity degrees of consequences in female children and female adolescents and how the understatement of this fact when assessing youth with ADHD greatly contributes to the underdiagnosing of this disorder in the female phenotype. Methods: This work is a literature review. The importance of awareness for the possible symptomatic manifestation differences depending on gender is key to perform the right diagnosis, initiate treatment as soon as possible and attempt to avoid the emergence/ a worsening in severity degree of comorbidities and long term outcomes associated with this disorder. Results: Female children and female adolescents with ADHD are underdiagnosed or have delayed diagnosis of ADHD compared to the opposite gender with the same disorder. The female phenotype seems to predominantly display inattentive symptoms rather than the more frequently seen disruptive behaviour. In addition, there is higher prevalence of anxiety and depressive comorbid disorders in the female phenotype. Conclusion: Even though there is evidence that ADHD presentation differs depending on gender, little is still known about which are the exact parameters where ADHD in females differs from ADHD in males and further research on this field is required.
