Kopsavilkums
Background: Different parenting styles influence the child’s development differently especially in the early childhood when the child is heavily depended on its caregiver. The purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation of different parenting styles with the dental health and oral hygiene of preschool children from 3 to 7 years of age. Methods: A comprehensive search was conducted across three databases, including PubMed, Scopus and PRIMO. The population of interest were preschool children exposed to different parenting styles. The dental caries and oral hygiene were the outcomes of interest. Results: A total of 55 articles were initially identified from various databases. Ten studies of cross-sectional design met the inclusion criteria and were analysed in depth. The review comprehensively examined how different parenting styles are correlated with the preschool child’s dental health and oral hygiene. This includes papers with publication years from 2012 till 2023. The results suggest that children raised by authoritative parents have less caries and a better oral hygiene compared with children of permissive and authoritarian parents. Children of permissive parents have more dental caries and a worse oral hygiene compared with the authoritative and authoritarian parenting styles. Conclusion: Preschool children of authoritative parents show overall better dental health and oral hygiene compared with authoritarian and permissive parenting. Permissive parenting seems to be related to increased dental caries experience and inadequate oral hygiene in preschool children.
