Kopsavilkums
Physical and verbal violence against healthcare workers has reached alarming level worldwide. The World Medical Association has recognized violence against medical staff as an international crisis that threatens the foundations of healthcare systems and significantly impacts patient health (Vento et al., 2020). Methodology: The study included 104 respondents working as healthcare professionals in the emergency departments of hospitals X and Y. Data collection was conducted using the World Health Organization developed questionary about workplace violence in healthcare sector. For data analysis Chi – square and Fisher’s exact test were used to assess associations, alongside frequency tables. Results: The most commonly reported type of violence was verbal abuse (78,1%), followed by physical assaults (51,4%), intimidation (36,5%), sexual harassment (11,5%) and racist harassment (5,8%). According to the results of the Chi – square and Fisher’s exact tests, there were no statistically significant differences between the occurrence of violence and respondents’ gender, age or work experience (P>0,05). The results show that patients were the most frequent perpetrators. The study found that despite existing workplace procedures on how to respond to violence, only a portion of respondents (68,6%) were aware of them, and just over half of those (53,8%) knew how to apply them. Less than half (46,7%) of respondents stated that reporting workplace violence incidents is supported. Conclusions: The results indicate that the occurrence of workplace violence in the healthcare sector is not dependent on staff gender, age or experience.
