Kopsavilkums
The aim of the study was to evaluate the level of health literacy in patients with allergies to pets and the methods to reduce allergy symptoms they use. Health literacy is a person`s ability to handle information about their health and services. The higher the health literacy level is, the better is the control and prevention of illness. In some countries and groups of people, health literacy is still not high enough. A questionnaire was used to investigate the level of health literacy in patients with pet allergy and their management of allergy symptoms, which included demographic data of respondents, a validated Health Literacy Questionnaire Q16 and the use of medical therapies and non-pharmacological methods to reduce allergy symptoms. The Chi-Square/ Fisher Test was used to detect patterns. The level of health literacy was not high enough for patients with pet allergy. A relationship was found that people with higher level of education had a higher level of health literacy. Respondents were also found to be responsible about their health problem, as taking appropriate medication and taking preventive measures. Over-the-counter oral antihistamines were the most common choice for relieving allergy symptoms and cetirizine tablets were the most popular choice. The most common preventive measures were reducing/ avoiding contact with the allergen, regular cleaning and changing clothes after contact with the animal. The scope of the research work is 38 pages, 47 sources are used, it contains 2 figures, 5 tables and 4 appendices.
