Kopsavilkums

This Master's thesis examines the topic of “Symptoms of Stress, Anxiety, and Depression and Eating Behaviour Among Older Adults”. Depression, anxiety, and stress often go unrecognized or untreated in older adults. Research indicates that mental health factors can be closely linked to disordered eating behaviours, which, in turn, affect overall health and quality of life. Exploring the interrelationship of these issues enables the development of more effective care strategies and preventive measures. The aim of the master’s thesis is to identify the self-reported frequency of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms and their relationship with eating behaviour among older adults, as well as to examine how these phenomena are associated with sociodemographic characteristics and health-related factors. Two hypotheses are proposed in this Master’s thesis: 1.There is a statistically significant association between the self-reported frequency of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms and eating behaviour. 2.There is a statistically significant association between the self-reported frequency of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms and eating behaviour with sociodemographic characteristics and health-related factors in older adults. Research design and instruments: The research employed a correlational, non-experimental, descriptive, comparative, and quantitative cross-sectional design. Data were collected using the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale (DASS) (Lovibond & Lovibond, 1995), the Three-Factor Eating Questionnaire – Revised 18 Item Version (TFEQ-R18V2) (Cappelleri et al., 2009), and a self-developed questionnaire by the thesis author comprising 12 questions on sociodemographic and health-related factors. The study sample consisted of 626 respondents. Key findings highlight the importance of several interrelated sociodemographic and health aspects in the prevalence of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms among older adults. Statistically significant positive correlations were found between all three mental health symptom frequency indicators and the indicators of eating behaviour. Conclusions: As the frequency of depression, anxiety, and stress symptoms increases, higher levels of disordered eating behaviours are observed. Sociodemographic and health-related factors show statistically significant differences in relation to both mental health symptomatology and eating behaviour.
