Abstract
Title: Impact of pharmacist-cardiologist collaboration on cardiovascular patient education Objectives. Effective cardiovascular disease prevention lies not only in using medication but also in lifestyle changes, which are possible only by educating patients on the importance of healthy diet, exercise and more factors. The aim for this study was to evaluate the need of an information brochure about necessary lifestyle changes for cardiovascular patients according to patients and cardiologists. Materials and methods. In this study two anonymous surveys were made from November 2019 to January 2020 – one for patients and one for cardiologists. Patient survey consisted of questions about received information from doctors during their visits. Cardiologist survey consisted of questions about the necessity of an information brochure about non-pharmacotherapeutic disease management and its contents, which were developed using guidelines from “European Society of Cardiology”. Results were gathered and analyzed by Microsoft Excel program. Results. There were 182 participants included in the patient survey and 17 participants in cardiologist survey. Although patients rated doctors given information during visits as mostly understandable (58.2%) and always understandable (24.7%), more frequently mentioned factors that complicate receiving information were “lack of time” (43.4%), “stress during visit” (37.9%) and “the usage of unknowable words / medical terms” (26.7%). Therefore patients acknowledged the need for written information that could be read after the visit with a 3.6 point rating. Correspondingly in cardiologist survey the most often mentioned interfering factor was “lack of time” (70.6%), which leaded to a positive assessment of the need for information brochure, respectively, value of average score was relatively high - 4.2 points of the maximum 5 (very useful), especially emphasizing sections about healthy diet and exercise. Conclusion. Problematic information exchange in both surveyed study groups verified the need of information brochure development for cardiovascular patients.
