Annotation: This research paper explores the impact of a vegan diet on athletic performance, analyzing both its benefits and potential drawbacks. Veganism, characterized by the complete exclusion of animal-derived products, has gained popularity in sports due to its health benefits, including improved cardiovascular health, reduced inflammation, and enhanced endurance capacity. However, the dietary restrictions may lead to deficiencies in essential nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids, which are critical for optimal athletic performance. The study reviews existing literature on how a plant-based diet affects endurance and strength athletes differently. While endurance athletes may experience improved oxygen uptake and cardiovascular efficiency, strength athletes may struggle with muscle protein synthesis due to lower bioavailability of plant proteins. Supplementation with key nutrients such as creatine and high-quality plant-based proteins is essential for maintaining performance levels. Overall, the findings suggest that a well-planned vegan diet can sustain and, in some cases, enhance athletic performance, particularly in endurance sports, but requires careful nutritional management for strength and power athletes. Further research is needed to assess long-term effects on elite athletes.
