Abstract
Lielākā daļa izmantoto avotu bija publicēti laika posmā no 2000.gada sākuma līdz 2020.gadam.
Background: Female Athlete Triad is a serious potential threat of girls and young women involved in professional sports, commonly unnoticed or underdiagnosed besides overt signs and symptoms. Due to potentially lifelong consequences, it is crucial to detect this condition and interfere as early as possible. Objective: The aim of this research paper is to provide knowledge and awareness about an harmful influence within the profession of young female athletes with significant, possibly irreversible consequences, and how to prevent them. Its purpose is to figure out whether this condition is a threat to be taken seriously at every level or might not need immediate intervention in all cases. Methodology: For this literature review a total of 47 sources in form of research papers, articles, guidelines and books were evaluated. The main databases used were PubMed, ScienceDirect and the websites of global healthcare organisations. All journals and websites were in English. The used sources were written and published primarily from the early 2000’s to 2020, some mentioned studies are from the 90’s, but with still relevant and noteworthy results. Conclusion: Female Athlete Triad is a serious medical condition with possibly life-long consequences appearing in young female athletes due to inadequate adaptation of caloric energy intake to exercise amount. In any point on the spectrum an intervention and treatment is indicated to prevent further progression and irreversible consequences. A multidisciplinary team approach is necessary to support, guide and treat an affected athlete. To achieve clinical improvement, non-pharmacological is the fundamental strategy to go with and requires understanding and compliance from all members. It is safe to say that any girl or young woman disregarding the intensity and range of her condition should be treated immediately and individually to prevent her from reaching pathological end points of low energy availability, functional hypothalamic amenorrhea and osteoporosis.
