Individuals who have suffered from spinal cord injury (SCI) have an increased risk of developing secondary osteoporosis (OP). The goal of the research paper “Spinal Cord Injury-Induced Osteoporosis – A Literature Review” is to explore the pathophysiology of this condition, its diagnostic approaches, available treatments, and their efficacy. SCI-induced OP has a different pathogenesis when compared to other types. Various non-pharmacological and pharmacological treatment opportunities for SCI-induced OP have been investigated. Functional electrical stimulation rowing in combination with bisphosphonates is a reasonable choice. Teriparatide is demonstrated to have lower efficacy than other medications described. Newer literature shows that treatment with other pharmacological groups like denosumab and anti-sclerostin antibodies may also be suitable.
