Kopsavilkums
The aim of the study was to adapt the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS; Tangney et al. (2004)) in Latvian. BSCS consists of 13 statements, nine of which are reverse-coded. The scale is designed to measure self-control as a personality trait through self-assessment. As no validated Latvian version of this instrument previously existed, the present study focused on translation and evaluation of its psychometric properties. Three research questions were posed to assess the scale’s internal consistency, factor structure, and suitability for use in the adult population of Latvia. The study sample consisted of 197 participants — 107 women (54.3%) and 90 men (45.7%) — aged between 18 years and older (M = 26.8; SD = 11.21). Data was collected online using the snowball sampling method. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire and the Latvian version of the Brief Self-Control Scale, which was translated using the back-translation method in accordance with the International Test Commission (ITC, 2017) guidelines. The internal consistency of the scale, measured by Cronbach’s alpha, was 0.746, indicating acceptable reliability. All items demonstrated adequate response and discrimination indices. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure — “Self-Discipline” and “Impulsivity” — which explained 37.34% of the total variance. This factor solution aligns with several previous international adaptations of the BSCS. Confirmatory factor analysis indicated acceptable model fit for the 13-item two-factor model (CFI = 0,89; TLI = 0,74; RMSEA = 0,074; SRMR = 0,067). The results suggest that the Latvian version of the Brief Self-Control Scale is theoretically grounded and psychometrically reliable. The scale is suitable for use in both research and applied psychological practice to assess self-control in the adult population of Latvia.
