Kopsavilkums
Respondenti ietilpst vecumā no 18–65 gadiem (M = 28,71; SD = 10,33), 87,5% respondentu bija sievietes.
In recent years, a decline in the level of mental well-being among students has been observed. Additionally, students frequently engage in unhealthy habits. Research reflects that the level of mental well-being in students is often associated with the regularity of the use of unhealthy habits. Furthermore, there is reason to conclude that mindful self-care methods reduce unhealthy habit prevalence and improve individuals' mental well-being. The aim of this study – to examine the relationship between mindful self-care, unhealthy habits, and mental well-being among students. Method: The necessary data for the study were obtained through a sociodemographic survey, the Mindful Self-Care Scale (MSCS; Cook-Cottone & Guyker, 2018), which was used to assess the frequency of self-care, three single-item questions about health-related behaviors (smoking, alcohol consumption, and substance use), which were used to determine the frequency of unhealthy habits, and the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Well-being Scale (WEMWBS; Tennant et al., 2007), which was used to measure the frequency of well-being experiences. A total of 392 participants were involved in the study, which were studying at a university in Latvia, were permanent residents of Latvia, and had a sufficient level of English to complete the survey. Respondents were aged between 18 to 65 years (M = 28.71; SD = 10.33). Of the respondents, 87.5% were females. Data was collected through an online survey conducted between April and December 2024. The study included measures assessing gender differences and variable relationships. Results: Gender differences are evident in the indicators of “Self-Compassion and Purpose”, where women score higher, and in smoking, alcohol consumption, and substance use, where men exhibit higher scores. No significant correlation was found between mindful self-care and alcohol consumption or smoking, except for certain subscales. However, a correlation was found between mindful self-care and substance use, except in one subscale. A significant correlation was also found between mindful self-care and mental well-being. In contrast, no correlation was found between smoking, alcohol consumption, and mental well-being. However, a correlation was found between substance use and mental well-being. Conclusions: Overall, mindful self-care was found to correlate with students' mental well-being. Additionally, a correlation was found between substance use and mental well-being. It is also important to note the correlation between mindful self-care and substance use. The results of the study can be used in higher education institutions to improve students' well-being, as well as in psychologists' work with students.
