The thesis “Cardiovascular Risks in Night Shift Workers: A Systematic Review of Evidence and Implications for Occupational Health Screening” by Samer Fathalla Ali presents a systematic literature review exploring the relationship between night shift work and cardiovascular health outcomes. The study compiles European cohort data consistent with the EU Working Time Directive to evaluate the effects of night shift exposure on ischemic heart disease, cerebrovascular events, atrial fibrillation and mortality. Evidence shows an exposure–response association, where prolonged or intensive night work increases the risk of ischemic and cerebrovascular diseases, particularly after five or more years of exposure. Pathophysiological mechanisms include circadian rhythm desynchronization, sleep deprivation, and inflammatory responses. Current Swedish occupational health screening guidelines, used as a reference for EU standards, were analyzed and found insufficient in frequency and inclusion criteria. The author recommends risk-stratified health assessments with more frequent cardiovascular screening for night shift workers. The study concludes that night shift work represents a modifiable occupational risk factor for circulatory diseases and calls for improved preventive health strategies across EU member states.en-UK
