Kopsavilkums

Ievads. Aleksitīmija statistiski nozīmīgi, vāji, pozitīvi korelē ar sekojošām stresa pārvarēšanas stratēģijam: noliegšana (r = 0,242, p = 0,001); atteikšanās no rīcības (r = 0,251, p = 0,001); domu novēršana no problēmas (r = 0,299, p = 0,001).
Introduction. Alexithymia is an inability to understand and express feelings and emotions, it is a risk factor for mental and physical disorders. A stress coping strategy is an action or thought process that is used to deal with distress, strategies are divided into adaptive and non-adaptive. The relationship between alexithymia and stress coping strategies has not been researched enough. Aim. To investigate the correlation between alexithymia and coping strategies in the RSU faculty of medicine student population. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional study was conducted, which was based on an anonymous survey that included 84 questions (socialdemographic survey, TAS-20, COPE). The obtained data were analysed with IBM SPSS Statistics and Microsoft Excel programs - using descriptive statistics and Pearson's chi-square test, Spearman correlations and partial correlations. Results. Alexithymia is observed in 86 (48.3%, 95% CI 40.5-56.2) respondents, alexithymia is possible in 58 (32.6%, 95% CI 26.4-39.30) respondents, alexithymia was not observed 34 (19.1%, 95% CI 13.5-24.7) respondents. Alexithymia is statistically significant, weak, and negatively correlated with the study year (r = -0.356, p = 0.001). Alexithymia is statistically significant, very weak, positive correlated with the following stress coping strategies: alcohol-drug disengagement (r = 0.168, p = 0.025); restraint coping (r = 0.187, p = 0.013). Alexithymia correlates statistically significant, weak, positive with the following stress coping strategies: denial (r = 0.242, p = 0.001); behavioural disengagement (r = 0.251, p = 0.001); mental disengagement (r = 0.299, p = 0.001). Alexithymia correlates statistically significantly, weakly, negatively with the following stress coping strategies: seeking support for instrumental reasons (r = -0.206, p = 0.006); seeking social support for emotional reasons (r = -0.240, p = 0.089.) Conclusions. Alexithymia is associated with the use of non-adaptive stress coping strategies. Students with alexithymia are more likely to use the following stress coping strategies - alcohol / drug use, restraint coping, denial, behavioural and mental disengagement from the problem. Students without alexithymia are more likely to use the following stress coping strategies - seeking social support for instrumental reasons and emotional reasons.
