Kopsavilkums
Basketball is a dynamic team sport, during which players must constantly evaluate and adapt their actions to rapidly changing external conditions. Such sports, where the choice of action is largely influenced by external conditions, are called open-skill sports. Open-skill sports, including basketball, emphasize the need for highly developed cognitive abilities. Executive functions are essential – especially inhibitory control. No less important aspect for successful performance is mental toughness. Despite the need for highly developed inhibitory control and mental toughness abilities, they have been understudied in basketball and there are no studies in relation to basketball competition performance. Determination of inhibitory control, mental toughness, and electroencephalogram event-related potentials of “BK Talsi” basketball players and their relationship with performance in “Ramirent National Basketball League” games. Methods: the study was conducted at the “Sports Science Research Laboratory” of the RSU Latvian Academy of Sports Pedagogy. The study involved 9 “BK Talsi” basketball players who play in the “Ramirent National Basketball League”. Inhibitory control abilities were assessed using the “Go/NoGo” and “Stroop” psychometric tasks, and mental toughness was assessed using the “Sports Mental Toughness Questionnaire”. In addition, electroencephalography was performed and the N2 and P3 components of evoked potentials were analysed. Game data from the official website of the Latvian Basketball Association (www.basket.lv) were used to analyze performance. Results and conclusions: “BK Talsi” basketball players with the highest inhibitory control, mental toughness, and electroencephalogram event-related potential indicators had statistically significantly (p<0,05) better performance indicators in the “Ramirent National Basketball League” games, in all performance-characterizing categories.
