Abstract
Ievads:
Background: Conspiracy theories may serve certain psychological needs and may therefore be adopted more frequently by people in need to satiate those needs. Narcissism is characterized by heightened feelings of self-admiration, grandiosity, egocentricism. Due to narcissisms complex composition of psychological traits, an increased narcissism level in an individual may increase conspiracy belief. Aim: To investigate the correlation between belief in conspiracy theories and a narcissistic personality. Method: Use of multiple scientific databases to find relevant studies. The databases used were PubMed, Scopus, Clinical Key, Wiley Online Library, Sage Journals to carefully sort out research articles published from the year 2010 to 2023 to be included in current literature review. Conclusions: Narcissism is found to be a robust predictor of conspiracy belief throughout research, no matter culture differences, and context of narcissism (i.e., individual, or collective). Paranoia is found to be a trait within narcissism, which exposes narcissists to greater conspiracy belief. Other traits such as delusions or use of defensive self- tactics found in narcissists heightens the feeling of paranoia. Narcissists also have a special relationship with the need to stand out from the crowd, to be unique which results in a range of different behaviors such as consumerism of exclusive products, career-motivation, and belief in conspiracy theories.
