Kopsavilkums

Title: Family doctors’ knowledge of WHO guidelines on physical activity and promotion of physical activity for their patients. Background: Family doctors are in a good position to assess and recommend physical activity (PA) to their patients. However, in recent years, there have been no studies on the knowledge of family doctors’ practicing in Latvia about the WHO guidelines on physical activity and the frequency of physical activity promotion for their patients. Objective: To determine the relationship between the knowledge of family doctors practicing in Latvia about the World Health Organization’s guidelines on physical activity for adults and the frequency of providing physical activity recommendations to their patients. Methods: The study used an electronic questionnaire, which included questions created by the author about general respondent data, questions about PA guidelines for adults based on the WHO guidelines on PA (WHO, 2020), and translated questions using a survey created by Fominienė, Fominaitė and Sipavičienė (2024) about the frequency of family doctors providing recommendations about PA to their patients. Results: The study included 87 respondents. The results show that 57.5% of respondents have “no knowledge” of the WHO PA guidelines, 36.8% of respondents have “poor knowledge”, 2.3% of respondents have “average knowledge”, and 3.4% of respondents have “good knowledge”. The median of respondents’ answers to all questions about the frequency of PA promotion was “frequent”. The results show that there is no statistically significant relationship between respondents’ knowledge of the 2020 WHO guidelines on PA and respondents’ frequency of PA promotion to their patients. Conclusions: Slightly less than half of the study participants – family doctors – have read and/or heard about the 2020 WHO guidelines on PA for adults, but only less than four percent of all respondents are able to provide accurate answers about them, the remaining respondents have either average, poor or no knowledge of the guidelines. Most of the study participants often provide PA recommendations to their patients, despite the study participants’ insufficient knowledge of the 2020 WHO guidelines on PA for adults. No statistically significant relationship was observed between the study participants’ knowledge of the 2020 WHO guidelines on PA for adults and the frequency of study participants providing PA recommendations to their patients.
