The bachelor thesis “Enablers and Barriers of Early-Stage Commercial Innovation in Latvia’s Startup Ecosystem” assesses the current state of the startup ecosystem in Latvia. The aim of the work is to identify and propose solutions to the critical barriers and enabling factors influencing the commercial innovation of startups in Latvia. The research question is: “What changes can be implemented to increase the rate of innovation for early-stage start-ups in Latvia?” This is done by evaluating the theory of startups and commercial innovation, to facilitate a background understanding of academic views on the subject. Then follows a comprehensive dive into the Latvian startup ecosystem – what support mechanisms are present and what is the data on startups. That is essential to identify prevailing inefficiencies and assistance available that reflect the reality of startups in Latvia. This is used as a basis for expert interviews to comprehend the barriers and enablers, that are required to draw up the conclusions and proposals by evaluating current actor perceptions with the data gathered. In general, startups have become a lifeblood of modern economies to generate advancements through their sheer innovation capabilities. Startups have substantial potential, that can be fully optimized with startup ecosystems by providing supportive infrastructure to aid in the development of early-stage businesses. These businesses can turn into ‘unicorns’, growing the economy through wealth generation, talent, and knowledge dissemination. As the ecosystem involves many parties, through governments, institutions, investors, programs, universities, startups themselves, it has to be a network effort to make substantial shift as not one sole participant can do it. Even well-designed governmental programs may fail if foundational gaps exist in entrepreneurial education or awareness. Thus, proposals have been made in each of these sections, to indicate what every party can do. The recommendations call for increased collaboration, between multiple sets of participants to enable a network effect. Entrepreneurial awareness methods are advised to further support the ecosystem development. Lastly, startups themselves should create and seek opportunities for faster growth. By implementing these incremental changes, Latvia’s startup ecosystem can develop sustainably over time. The whole thesis with annexes consists of 145 pages, with 6 tables, 7 figures, and 84 sources.
