Kopsavilkums
Pētījuma izlasi veidoja 57 vīrieši, kuri izcieš brīvības atņemšanas sodu dažādās ieslodzījuma vietās Latvijā, vecumā no 21 līdz 69 gadiem (M = 39,21; SD = 12,44).
The aim of the study was to adapt the Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST-20; Skinner, 1982) into Latvian and to evaluate its psychometric properties in a sample of incarcerated individuals. The internal consistency of the scale, item discrimination indices, and factor structure were analyzed. In addition, the shortened version DAST-10 was validated, and its classification thresholds were compared to those of the full version. The study also examined the convergent validity of DAST-20 by comparing it with the Leeds Dependence Questionnaire (LDQ) to explore theoretical overlap between the instruments. The sample consisted of 57 male inmates serving prison sentences in various correctional facilities in Latvia, aged between 21 and 69 years (M = 39.21; SD = 12.44). The Latvian version of DAST-20 demonstrated good internal consistency (α = 0.83), and most items met accepted psychometric standards. Factor analysis revealed a two-factor structure: the first factor encompassed behavioral and social consequences, such as relationship difficulties, problems at work or in education, and involvement in illegal activities. The second factor reflected physical and psychological effects, including somatic symptoms, withdrawal indicators, and previous rehabilitation experience. DAST-10 showed a strong correlation with the full version (r = 0.932; p < 0.001) and comparable classification accuracy, supporting its utility as a screening instrument. No statistically significant correlation was found with LDQ scores, indicating a conceptual distinction between the measures—DAST focusing on behavioral consequences, while LDQ emphasizes psychological dependence. Overall, the findings indicate that the Latvian version of DAST-20 is a psychometrically reliable tool suitable for use in prison populations in Latvia. DAST-10, in turn, offers a practical and time-efficient alternative in settings requiring rapid screening.
