Kopsavilkums
• Reitterapijas pakalpojuma praktiskie aspekti
Bachelor Thesis Title: Parents' Experience with Equine-Assisted Therapy for Children and Adolescents with Intellectual Disabilities and Neurodevelopmental Disorders: A Phenomenological Study Aim of the Thesis: To explore parents’ experiences related to receiving equine-assisted therapy services for their children with intellectual disabilities and/or neurodevelopmental disorders. Research Methods: A descriptive phenomenological approach was applied in the study. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with six parents whose children with intellectual and/or neurodevelopmental disorders regularly attend equine-assisted therapy sessions. The data were analyzed based on Colaizzi’s phenomenological method of data analysis. Research Results: The data analysis resulted in the identification of three main themes: • Parents’ emotional experiences in relation to equine-assisted therapy • Equine-assisted therapy as a family experience • Practical aspects of the equine-assisted therapy service These themes provided a deeper understanding of how parents perceive and experience equine-assisted therapy in the context of their child’s rehabilitation. Conclusions: The study revealed that parents often had concerns about the safety and suitability of equine-assisted therapy when beginning it for their children with intellectual and/or neurodevelopmental disorders. These concerns diminished when they observed their child’s progress and the involvement of professional staff. Parents frequently associated equine-assisted therapy with improved emotional regulation in their child and, in some cases, with positive changes in the child’s overall functioning. Moreover, the therapy was perceived not only as a medical intervention but also as a meaningful and motivating leisure activity for the child. Professionalism and the ability to adapt therapy to the child’s needs were essential to the parents. The study also highlighted several organizational challenges in the provision of equine-assisted therapy in Latvia, including limited accessibility, lack of information, and inconsistent quality of services.
