Abstract
The topic of the bachelor thesis “Alcohol consumption tendency in adults during the COVID – 19 pandemic '' was chosen based on research on alcohol consumption habits of the population in Latvia and worldwide. The aim of the study is to find out the trends of alcohol consumption in the adult in the adult population during the COVID-19 pandemic. The objectives of the study are: To identify alcohol use trends in the early, middle and late adult population during the COVID-19 pandemic, to identify alcohol use disorders in the adult population using the AUDIT test, to compare data on alcohol use trends in the early, middle and late adult population during the COVID-19 pandemic and to compare data on alcohol use trends and AUDIT test results in the early, middle and late adult population during the COVID-19 pandemic. The bachelor thesis consists of two parts: a literature review and a research section. The literature review describes 1) trends and prevalence of alcohol consumption in Latvia and worldwide, 2) consequences of alcohol consumption, 3) trends in alcohol consumption during the Covid-19 pandemic in Latvia and worldwide, and 4) alcohol consumption patterns in different age groups. Research section describes the research methodology, results and analysis of the obtained results. To achieve the research objective and to prove the research hypothesis, a quantitative method is used – questionnaire. Two types of questionnaires are used: a questionnaire designed by the author, which is used to find out general information about the study participants, as well as trends in alcohol consumption and an original instrument developed by the World Health Organisation - a structured questionnaire AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test). During the research 166 questionnaires were completed, of which 163 were valid. In total, 113 electronic questionnaires and 50 paper questionnaires were completed. The study sample consists of 163 respondents, including 84 early, 56 middle and 23 late adults. The results show that tendencies of alcohol use during the Covid-19 pandemic are characterised by low risk of alcohol-related problems in early adulthood, harmful drinking tendencies in middle adulthood and harmful drinking tendencies in late adulthood, with trends also indicating possible alcohol dependence. The results indicate statistically significant differences in drinking patterns between age groups. The thesis contains 12 tables and 47 references. The thesis consists of 40 pages, 12 pages of appendices.
