Kopsavilkums
Background: Medical students study a lot during their academic life at the university. Some students may experience stress and develop sleep dysfunction. The aim of this study is to see if there is any correlation between stress and insomnia among medical students. Topic and methods: All data and conclusions were obtained by a cross-sectional study by means of online-based questionnaire among medical students of Riga Stradins University. The questionnaires were distributed among all 12 semesters between Latvian and international students. The theoretic background about stress and insomnia was collected from databases such as Clinical Key, Up to date and Amboss. Result: The research shows that insomnia is present among medical students and there is a different distribution among gender and age group. Certain aspects of the stress score and confounders show to have a negative impact on sleep. There is also a big difference between high and low stress score among students. Furthermore, a significant correlation between stress score and insomnia groups can be observed. Conclusions: The study shows that individuals exposed to a higher amount of stress had an increased risk of developing insomnia. The majority of students have a good condition for sleep, but bedtime habits or medical conditions (confounders) might have impacted the result in the research.
