Abstract
This literature review examines the evidence surrounding physical activity and pregnancy, particularly the effects on the perinatal body. Those who were physically active during their pregnancy were less likely to develop gestational diabetes mellitus or pre-eclampsia, as well as being less likely to gain excessive weight during pregnancy. C-section deliveries were also less frequent among those who were active during their pregnancy and the overall experience of childbirth for the labouring parent was found to be less painful and less traumatic. In the post-partum period, physical activity had a protective effect against post-partum depression and pelvic floor muscle training was found to be effective in preventing urinary incontinence.
