Abstract
In this paper a literature analysis about depression, its relevance in society as well as its pathogenesis is carried out. Furthermore, I look at the available popular therapies and their effectiveness. Afterwards I look at the available information about transcranial magnetic stimulation, its mechanism of action, applications and efficacy in treating depression. I conclude that based on the available literature treatment depression is a highly relevant and important, yet difficult task within healthcare as a whole. Of the methods available to us now and routinely used, none is effective enough as a standalone therapy, to be considered as the definitive therapy for depression. Transcranial magnetic stimulation, through many trials and meta-analyses has repeatedly shown itself as a viable method, which is at least as effective as current treatment paradigms in treatment of depression. When considering the efficacy of the method as well as the safety profile and the fact that often it is used as a means of treating depression which is treatment resistant, I conclude that transcranial magnetic stimulation is an effective method for the treatment of depression and should be considered for routine use, at least, for treatment resistant depression.
