    Principles of Physical Education of Children in the Works of Jędrzej Śniadecki

    The article is devoted to the concept of physical education of children that were presented in papers of Jędrzej Śniadecki (1768–1838), a famous Polish-Lithuanian doctor, anthropologist, biologist, chemist, and philoso- pher. The study revealed that the works of J. Śniadecki were partly charac- teristic of the Enlightenment period. The main goal of Śniadecki’s papers was to educate society in order to fight with superstitions and negative habits that were widely spread in the working class as well as the upper class. He focused on preventive measures that would help to maintain good physical and mental health of a child, family and society. Śniadecki’s atti- tude included some Romanticist features. He believed that the modern way of living was dangerous for human health because of numerous social factors that changed the primary perfection, purity and natural powers of the human body. As an opposition to the modern lifestyle he puts natural- istic way of living. However, Śniadecki was also one of the first anthropologists in Lithuania and Poland. His works were the first attempts to find correla- tions between numerous factors such as nutrition, heredity and develop- ment of the human body. Moreover, Śniadecki could be referred to as one of the pioneers in didactics. His insights related to the different teaching methods applied to the pupils’ age and sex remain relevant until now.

    Rakstā ir aplūkota situācija psihiatrijā Krievijas impērijas Vidzemes, Kurzemes un Igaunijas guberņās laikā, kad slavenais psihiatrs Emīls Krēpe- līns (Emil Kraepelin, 1856–1926) strādāja par Vidzemes guberņas ārstu, vadot Dorpatas (Jurjevas, mūsdienu Tartu) Universitātes Nervu un psihisko slimību klīniku. Lai ilustrētu E. Krēpelīna ieguldījumu reģiona nozares attīstībā, rakstā ir ietverts arī viņa parakstīts nosūtījums slimniekam uz Aleksandra Augstumu slimnīcu Rīgā un no Dorpatas Nervu un psihisko slimību klīnikas pārvestas pacientes dokumentācija.

    Closed Venereology Wards in the German Democratic Republic

    Over the 40-year existence of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), multiple thousands of women have been committed to closed venereol- ogy wards. The system of compulsory hospitalisation to closed venere- ology wards established in the GDR was based on the Soviet healthcare system. Its purpose was not simply to sanction behavior that diverged from the prescribed socialist norm but also to educate women in accordance with socialist standards. The involuntarily committed women in the GDR were treated by measures of politicised medicine. This medicine was shaped and executed by actors who imposed their own standards on the victimised women daily. Moreover, all closed venereology wards in the GDR were monitored by the Ministry of State Security through a network of inoffi- cial informants.

    Kamerizstāde “Ādas” Paula Stradiņa Medicīnas vēstures muzejā 30.08.2018.–30.12.2018.

    No 2018. gada 30. augusta līdz 2018. gada 30. decembrim Paula Stradiņa Medicīnas vēstures muzeja mazajā izstāžu zālē bija apskatāma kamerizstāde “Ādas”, kurā pirmo reizi pēc restaurācijas (restauratore Ārija Ubarste) bija eksponēta Rīgas Stradiņa universitātes (RSU) Anatomijas muzeja krājumā glabātā tetovēto ādu kolekcija. Izstādes veidotāju mērķis bija piedāvāt plašāku un starpdiscipilnāru skatījumu uz kolekciju, kuras tapšanas vēsturiskais konteksts līdz šim bijis maz apzināts. Izstādes kuratore – Ieva Lībiete, māksliniece – Ausma Šmite, producents un scenogrāfs – Aleksejs Koškins.

    1905. gada revolūcija un garīgā veselība

    Latvijas historiogrāfijā joprojām nav pietiekami izpētīta 1905. gada revolūcijas tēma. Pirmā monogrāfija atjaunotajā Latvijā tika izdota tikai 2018. gadā, iezīmējot pozitīvu pavērsienu tēmas izpētē. Vēsturnieces Līgas Lapas nozīmīgajā pētījumā “Kaujinieki un mežabrāļi 1905. gada revolū- cijā Latvijā” (Rīga: Latvijas vēstures institūta apgāds, 2018) ir analizēta kaujinieku un mežabrāļu kustība, un tajā iezīmējas arī daudzas problēmas, kurām pētniecisko uzmanību varētu veltīt medicīnas vēsturnieki. Viena no tādām tēmām ir 1905. gada revolūcijas dalībnieku likteņi. Dažus no viņiem notikumu gaita vai pašu rīcība noveda psihiatriskajā slimnīcā Aleksandra Augstumos Rīgā. Pacientu slimību vēstures ir specifisks dokumentu veids, un mediķa skatījumam ir būtiska nozīme vēsturisko personību izpratnē. Piedāvājam Latvijā pirmo darbu, kas paver perspektīvu šāda veida avotu izpētē. Publiski pirmo reizi klausītāji ar to tika iepazīstināti Rīgas Stradiņa universitātes zinātniskās konferences Medicīnas vēstures sekcijas sēdē 2018. gadā. Tādējādi ceram radīt pamatu diskusijai par slimības vēs- turu izpētes jēgu un iespējamo nozīmi 1905. gada revolūcijas izpētē.

    Categorized Soviet Citizens in the Context of the Policy of Fighting Venereal Disease in the Soviet Latvia from Khrushchev to Gorbachev (1955–1985)

    In the Soviet period, the incidence of venereal diseases (VDs)2 was ideologically interpreted by authorities as a deficiency inherent in capi- talist countries. It was stated that VDs would be eliminated in the Soviet Union at the earliest possible date. Compared to the independent Republic of Latvia (1918–1940), during the Soviet period, despite a larger popu- lation, the number of registered VDs infected patients was significantly lower. In such a historical context, a strange ideological obsession could be observed in the activities pursued by Soviet authorities when fighting VDs. The notion of the VDs as a remnant of the capitalist system determined the treatment of Soviet citizens infected by the VDs as marginalised populations. In order to achieve the goal of becoming a country where the VDs were eliminated, the Soviet Union practised a drastic dispensarisation system in the treatment of VDs, which was focused only on certain groups of the population that were identified in the documents of internal use for the fight against VDs. Starting with the 1960s, the VDs fighting policy also included the fight against prostitution, euphemised as the fight against “frivolous women”, by directing the control against the female gender. At the same time, the decisions at the highest level of the Soviet government, that were mostly marked by the “not to be published” stamp, formally cor- responded to the ideas of gender equality and Soviet ideas of rule of law. In the context of the marginalised populations, authorities were of the opinion that it was justifiable to humiliate citizens, who would be forced to undergo unjustified medical examination, because the smallest proportion of marginalised populations, who were subjected to forced medical examination, turned out to be VDs positive. When assessing the extension of such prac- tices to the wider population, it was recognised that this would not contrib- ute to the strengthening of the Soviet rule of law. The purpose of the article is to reveal the development of the population categorisation practice in the context of the VDs fighting policy in the Latvian SSR.
