Background: Shift work is known to provide both flexibility and a good work-life balance for employees. While it is documented that shift work poses great risk for developing cardiovascular disease , the effects on mental health often remain unspoken. Disturbed sleeping patterns, increased cortisol levels and work related stress are few of the many factors that can lead to the development of depression. Aim: To examine the relationship between shift work and depression. It is of interest to identify the correlation between a disturbed sleeping pattern, circadian rhythm and shift work, and how it may lead to depression. In addition, it is valuable to study the incidence and prevalence of depression among shift workers compared to the general population. This study is also aimed to identify and evaluate effectiveness of pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions to reduce depression among shift-working individuals. Methods: The information in this literature review was taken from several scientific papers which were available on multiple E-databases, including PubMed, ProQuest, UptoDate, ScienceDirect and SageJournals. Results: Studies reveal that there is a high prevalence of sleep disturbance among shift workers, with poor sleep quality and insomnia, which pose high risks for developing depression. In addition, it is revealed that shift workers can experience difficulties in adapting to shift working schedules. Therapeutic interventions, with pharmacological and non- pharmacological approaches, reveal promising results both in reducing insomnia and depressive symptoms but also in improving sleep quality. Conclusions: Shift work is proven to have adverse effects on mental health. The interplay between work-related stress, disturbed circadian rhythm combined with neurotransmitter dysregulation and cortisol surge confirms that depression is a multifactorial phenomenon which can be managed effectively with either pharmacological and non-pharmacological approach.en-UKinfo:eu-repo/semantics/restrictedAccessShift workMental healthDepressionCortisolMelatoninCBT-ILED-light therapyInsomnia. The impact of shift work on mental health: Focus on depressionMaiņu darba ietekme uz garīgo veselību: uzsvars uz depresijuinfo:eu-repo/semantics/other
