Comparison of Habits and Perception of Contraceptive Use between Local and International Students of Riga Stradiņš University

Abstract

Vecums, kurā notiek pirmais dzimumakts ir samazinājies, un tajā pašā laikā palielinās nevēlamu grūtniecību un seksuāli transmisīvo infekciju (STI) risks (5). Pēc nevēlamas grūtniecības iestāšanās notiek nedroši aborti vai dzemdības, rodās neauglība un pat nāve. Nedrošie aborti ir aktuāls jautājums īpaši jaunattīstības valstīs, kur aborts var nebūt atļauts ar likumu vai ir apgrūtināta piekļuve veselības aprūpes pakalpojumiem (6,7). Tādēļ pusaudžu kontracepcijas paradumiem un uztverei būtu jāpievērš īpaša uzmanība. Tajā pašā laikā pastāv dažādas kontracepcijas metodes ar atšķirīgu efektivitātes pakāpi (8). Ir veikti vairāki pētījumi, iekļaujot augstāko izglītību iegūstošus studentus, kas aptver SRV un studentu attieksmi par to. Iepriekšējo pētījumu rezultāti liecina, ka studenti joprojām veic riskantas seksuālas darbības un ir nepieciešama labāka izglītošana par SRV (9). Pētījumi apstiprina, ka seksuālajiem un reproduktīvajiem ieradumiem ir svarīga loma veselības aprūpē. Pētījumi pierāda, ka kontracepcijas lietošana un izpratne dažādās kultūrās un ģeogrāfiskajos reģionos visā pasaulē ir atšķirīga. Izmantoto metožu klāsts ir atkarīgs no kontracepcijas metožu pieejamības noteiktā laikā un ģeogrāfiskā apgabalā (10). Šī pētījuma mērķis bija izvērtēt dažādu kontracepcijas metožu izmantošanu Rīgas Stradiņa universitātes (RSU) 2. kursa medicīnas studentu vidū kā arī analizēt studentu priekšstatus par kontracepciju un noskaidrot, kas ietekmē viņu kontracepcijas izvēli. Ņemot vērā to, ka RSU papildus vietējai medicīnas studiju programmai piedāvā arī starptautisku studiju programmu, tika pievērsta papildu interese iespējamām atšķirībām kontracepcijas paradumos starp starptautisko un vietējo studiju programmu studējošajiem. Izpratne par studentu domām un uztveri, kas balstās uz viņu personīgo izvēli, palīdzēs medicīnas speciālistiem plānot precīzāku izglītošanu par veselību kā arī palīdzēs uzzināt tēmas, kuras būtu jāapspriež vairāk.

The age for first sexual intercourse has been declining and at the same time the risk for unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STI) is increasing (5). Unwanted pregnancies are unfortunately followed by unsafe abortions or childbirths, infertility and even death. Unsafe abortions form an issue especially in developing countries, where abortion may not be allowed by the law or the access of health services is made difficult (6,7). This is why extra attention should be paid in adolescents’ contraceptive habits and perceptions. At the same time there are multiple different contraceptive methods with different stages of effectiveness (8). Multiple research have been carried out on higher education students covering SRH and attitudes. Results of previous studies show that students still perform risky sexual activities and there is need for better SRH education (9). Hence, sexual, and reproductive habits have an important role in health care. Studies show that awareness and use of contraception varies between cultures and geographical regions around the world. The range of different methods utilized depend on the accessibility and availability of different methods in a specific time and geographical area (10). The aim of this study was to assess the use of different contraceptive methods among 2nd year medical students in Riga Stradin’s University (RSU) and to analyse students’ perceptions towards contraception and to find out the reasons affecting their contraceptive decisions. Since RSU offers an international study program besides the local medical study program, further interest was payed towards the possible differences between contraceptive habits between the international and local study program. Understanding the students’ thoughts and perceptions behind their personal choices will help medical professionals to plan more precise health education and will help to find out which topics should be discussed more.
