Abstract
The topic of this study is "Characterization of trace element variability in cornflowers by ICP-MS and ED-XRF spectroscopy method". This study aimed to evaluate the application of ED-XRF and ICP-MS methods in plant and soil analysis using cornflowers (Centaurea cyanus L ) as a test object, which is a widespread plant in Europe and Asia and grows in cereal fields, roadsides and weeds. The topic of study is essential because there are few studies about element composition in cornflowers, and it is considered that plants are the connection between the quality of soil and human and animals body. Therefore, to achieve the project's goal, cornflowers and soil were collected from 3 regions of Latvia (Jēkabpils, Tukums, Smiltene). Plant organs -flowers, stems and leaves, roots- and soil were analyzed with both methods. In addition, the study assessed the impact of sample preparation on the results and the sensitivity and specificity of each method in determining chemical elements. The results show that both methods can be used in micro and macroelement detection in plants and soil. However, to obtain more accurate results, validating and calibrating the methods using specially prepared plant and soil standard materials is necessary. Furthermore, the study found and proved that sample collection and preparation is essential in analysis because it can affect results interpretation.
