Abstract
As the consumption of red meat increases, it becomes more important to analyse the health outcomes of the different levels of consumption and different types of red meat. Growing evidence suggests an association with red meat intake and different health outcomes like cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, and with higher mortality rate, for instance, cancer, cardiovascular and all-cause mortality. The literature review highlights result of current studies regarding red meat intake and associated health outcomes to see if a link between them can be confirmed. Additionally, this review also highlights the nutrition and importance of red meat in diet and consequences that occur if the intake is deficient. Research articles used in the literature review were found through PubMed and Google Scholar with the selection criteria: articles published in English within the last 10 years. Different studies proved an association between processed red meat intake and associated health outcomes (cardiovascular disease, diabetes mellitus, increased mortality rate). However, the association between unprocessed red meat intake and health outcomes were not as convincing. Even though these studies focus on the red meat intake of the participants, the results and confounders in the studies still indicated that the road to developing disease is multifactorial. The similar tendencies between the participants consuming higher amount of red meat also suggests that red meat intake is not the only cause of the investigated health outcomes, but that lifestyle also play a role. In conclusion the research question, if there is an association with red meat intake and associated health outcomes, was partially confirmed.
