Abstract
Background: Medical students are more susceptible to sleep deprivation due to the huge amount of material and long studies per week. Sleep habits among all people not only medical students can influence their life. Numerous studies showed that chronic insufficient amount of total night sleep can cause different diseases in the future. Aim: To evaluate sleep habits among Latvian medical students, the effect of work on them and what kind of consequences students might have due to sleep deprivation. Methods: List of the questions for Latvian medical students from the Rīga Stradiņš University was made. Information from the students who filled in an online questionnaire was collected and processed in Excel. Results were analyzed using IBM SPSS statistics 26.0 software. Results: Students who have lower marks have statistically significant difference between the time when they go to sleep (p<0.05), as well as between total time of night sleep (p<0.001). By the Independent-Samples Mann-Whitney U Test showed that analysing presence of work and total time study time have statistically significant difference (p<0.05), and presence of work with all total night sleep from as well (p<0.05). Conclusion: Academic performance was not affected by any sleeping habits and work. Sleeping hours are decreased due to the presence of the job. Time spending on studies is reduced in working students.
