Abstract
All kidney transplant recipients require immunosuppressive therapy in order to prevent transplant rejection. Immunosuppressive therapy increases the risk of developing common community acquired infections, as well as opportunistic infections (OI). Infectious diseases are one of the main causes of mortality after kidney transplantation. Optimal immunosuppressive therapy is essential to balance between the risk of transplant rejection and infectious complications, malignancy and cardiovascular events. Aim of the study was to assess the incidence and types of opportunistic infections among kidney transplant recipients.
