Abstract

Facial esthetics is one of the major components affecting a person’s self-esteem, while also contributing to one’s social integration. In modern society gummy smile is a major esthetic concern for many, with a high prevalence of around 10% of 20 to 30-year-olds. Therefore, orthodontic procedures must not only address the patients’ functional problems, but they should also comply with the patients’ esthetical expectations This paper includes the esthetical aspects of gummy smile and dives deep into the etiology of it, describing the different causes, and how each case could be treated based on its etiology. Although this review does not provide an evaluation of the effectiveness of the different treatments, it provides an overview of the possible treatment modalities, including more conventional treatment and newer modalities as well as it highlights several areas where further research is required. In short, the etiology can be classified into alveolo-skeletal, dento-periodontal, and cutaneo-mucosal, with treatment ranging from conventional orthodontics, to lasers, surgery, and botulinum toxin injections. Key words: gummy smile, esthetics, etiology, treatment.
