Abstract
The incidence rate of testicular cancer in Sweden and Latvia have been rising the last decades. An adequate testicular self-examination technique can provide health benefits for the individual, as macroeconomic benefits for the society. This study tries to establish potential difference of knowledge and attitude among adult men in Latvia and Sweden. The hypothesis of the research is “Latvian men have less knowledge of correct testicular self-examination (TSE) technique than Swedish men” and “Latvian men are less adherent to perform TSE than Swedish men”. The research is carried out via a quantitative prospective research method, using the author's original anonymous questionnaire. The questionnaire was distributed physically and digitally to Latvian and Swedish men during the year of 2022. Adult males from various social backgrounds in Latvia and Sweden (N=90) were included. The data was compiled in MS Excel and processed in the IBM SPSS statistics program. A majority had never been taught how to perform TSE. Around half of the participants claimed to never have performed TSE. There was no statistically significant difference between the two respective countries was found with one exception, which compared how comfortable the participant was being taught how to perform testicular self-examination by their family doctor. Overall, the attitude towards TSE seems to be positive among participants of both countries. The overall knowledge and adherence among the general adult male population in both countries were insufficient. The results are not in line with the author’s hypothesis.
