Abstract
Melnaugļu aronijas rezultāti būtiski neatšķiras no irbeņu uzrādītajiem rezultātiem. Pīlādžu vidējais kopējo polifenolu daudzums ir būtiski zemāks nekā irbeņu un melnaugļu aronijas sulās.
Oxidative stress is a widespread problem. Antioxidants, which are most abundant in fruits, vegetables and other natural products, play an important role in preventing oxidative stress. The aim of this study is to determine the antioxidant properties of fruit juices that are common in Latvia, but not widely consumed. The antioxidative activity and total phenolic content of fruit juices of 12 rowanberry, 10 guelder rose and chokeberry varieties were determined. For the determination of antioxidant activity, the generally accepted methods DPPH, ABTS and FRAP were used. The standard Folin – Ciocalteu method was used for the determination of total phenolics. The literature review summarises previous studies on the antioxidant capacity of these fruits and their potential application in the treatment of diseases. The fruits of rowan and guelder rose have been described in studies as potential adjunctive therapies for type II diabetes. In vivo studies, guelder rose has shown efficacy in the treatment of ureteral calculi and endometriosis. The fruit of the black chokeberry reduces blood pressure and total cholesterol levels and increases serum antioxidant levels. Different methods have been used to determine the antioxidant properties, with varying results. The highest antioxidant activity among the different rowanberry varieties was found for the common rowan, but similar results were also obtained for hybrid rowan varieties. The varieties of guelder rose show mostly similar results. On average, guelder rose juices show an antioxidant activity about 2 times higher than the average value of rowan juices. The results of chokeberry are not significantly different from those of guelder rose. The average total polyphenol content of rowan is significantly lower than that of guelder rose and chokeberry juices.
