Effects of Proanthocyanidins and Terpenes on Cholesterol and Glucose Homeostasis Related Pathologies

Abstract
Šajā rakstā galvenā uzmanība pievērsta divām galvenajām augu izcelsmes polifenola zāļu savienojumu grupām, tostarp proantocianidīniem un terpenoīdiem, un to ieguvumiem veselībai ar holesterīnu un glikozes homeostāzi saistītās patoloģijās. Šajā sakarā drīzumā tiek ieviests holesterīna metabolisms un insulīna rezistence, un jo īpaši sīkāk tiek pārskatīta polifenolu pretdiabēta un anti-aterosklerotiskā molekulārā iedarbība. Visbeidzot, tiek sniegti ieteikumi par potenciālajiem Baltijas/Ziemeļvalstu augu taksoniem, kas satur uzrādītos polifenolus. Turklāt ir sniegtas dažas atziņas par iespējamiem nākotnes pētniecības mērķiem, piemēram, jaunu zāļu atklāšanu un izstrādi.
This paper focuses on two major groups of plant derived polyphenolic medicinal compounds including proanthocyanidins and terpenoids, and their health benefits in cholesterol and glucose homeostasis related pathologies. In this respect, cholesterol metabolism and insulin resistance are shortly introduced and especially the antidiabetic and anti-atherosclerotic molecular effects of polyphenols are reviewed in more detail. Finally, suggestions are given about potential Baltic/Nordic plant taxa containing presented polyphenols. Additionally, some insights are given about possible future research targets such as new drug discovery and development.
