Abstract
The research study “Diversity of genres, topics and sources in the Latvian Radio broadcasts” pays attention to the essential components of qualitative content of the two most informative analytical radio stations of the Latvian Radio (LR1 and LR4) – the diversity of genres, themes and information sources. The study finds out how diverse the content is received by the two radio station audiences, what are the most common genres, topics and information sources. The results of the work are based on the content of both radio stations of a randomly selected workday of 2019. Information from both stations for all broadcasts of the day under study is classified according to the above criteria. Even though the information was classified into 12 genres, 18 topics and 28 information source categories in the study, which shows that the mentioned content quality criteria are widely represented, however, problems were revealed that the created content is not diverse. Two genres and five themes predominate. Sources of information, on the other hand, are widely represented, and none of the source categories is leading in the provision of information. Problems in the diversity of content can pose a threat to Latvian society, as genres and themes are not fully represented. The results obtained in the study can be useful for Latvian Radio producers and journalists, who should pay more attention to content criteria in order to improve the diversity of information in programs. Producers of both stations are advised to pay more attention to such genres as informative analytical, reportage, discussion. And balance the range of topics so as not to explicitly dominate just five topics.
