Abstract

The topic of this master's thesis is "Research of the possibilities of implementing patient-centered care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit “. The theoretical aspects of the introduction of patient-centered care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) are analyzed in the work, after which the theoretical framework of the research was developed. Analyzing the theory, it has been found that patient-centered care options at NICU have been explored around the world. Studies are carried out in local clinics and between clinics in different countries where NICU are located. Today, patient-centered care is a relevant approach to childcare, but there are still practices in hospitals that limit parental presence and participation in neonatal care. Patient-centered care is based on the ability of staff and parents to work together by building trust. The aim of the study was to find out the possibility of introducing patient-centered care in the neonatal intensive care unit. 3 tasks were defined: 1. To describe patient-centered care in the neonatal intensive care unit. 2. To evaluate the cooperation between the staff and parents in the neonatal intensive care unit. 3. To analyze the basic elements of the patient-centered care approach in connection with the introduction of patient-centered care in the neonatal intensive care unit. Hypothesis “Staff attitude and communication skills are the key elements in the implementation of patient-centered care in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit” - is confirmed. Regression analysis showed that communication and attitude are the strongest elements of patient care that have the most essential impact on the quality of patient care. As a result, the communication skills and attitude of healthcare professionals towards parents and the newborn significantly improve the quality of patient-centered care. This master’s thesis consists of 63 pages, it contains 11 tables, 20 illustrations, 80 literature sources were used. Slavinska, Ilona.
