Abstract
At the beginning of autumn 2019, the Latvian Association of Free Poets established an initiative to “resume” negotiations on the establishment of the Department of Poetry at the Art Academy of Latvia, presenting this idea to the media as well. The idea was clearly welcomed by a number of members of the media and was published on various platforms: on the Internet, TV, radio and in the print media. However, what the mass media probably did not know was the fact that part of what was said by poets was falsification. As a result, this media event reached a new level, becoming a subversion of culture, which also consciously or unconsciously targets the mass media not only order of higher literature education in Latvia. The aim of the bachelor paper is to find out how the specifics and shortcomings of cultural journalism in the organization of mass media influence the reality of cultural events in the media, more specifically looking at the the establishment of the AAL Poetry Department as a subversive pseudo-event. The theoretical structure of the work is based on the peculiarities of cultural journalism, the specifics of contemporary mass media work, and the use of cultural subversion. Qualitative content analysis and semi-structured interview methods were used in order to fulfill the objective conditions.
