Abstract
The LCHF diet stands for low carbohydrate and high fat, a diet that consists of mostly of fat and a very restricted carbohydrate intake. The diet has divided experts all over the world into two groups, the ones who support it and those who oppose it. A low carbohydrate diet allows one to ingest less 200g of carbohydrates per day. The recommended daily intake of carbohydrates according to WHO should be 200-300 g per day. So, what does scientific research really say about the health effects of a low carbohydrate diet in general, LCHF specifically? In this literature review articles were reviewed in purpose of finding out the health effects that a low carbohydrate diet was found to generate. A low carbohydrate diet affects the cognitive function in a healthy individual negatively but in it improves the verbal memory of the elderly people with Alzheimer’s disease. The insulin sensitivity was not affected but the cholesterol levels increased with the LCHF diet, both the HDL-cholesterol, LDL- cholesterol and the triglycerides increased. Greater weight loss was achieved with LCHF diet compared to the traditional weight loss diet. A shortened lifespan was seen due to high fat intake. When ischemia occurred the recovery of the damaged tissue was not as successful with LCHF diet as with HCLF diet (High carbohydrates, low fat). We can conclude that the food we ingest does affect or bodies one way or another. The scientist disagrees on the extent to which the macronutrients are important for our well-being and our health, as well as what is the optimal composition of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. The diet composition might work for one individual but might not be as suitable for another individual.
