Abstract
In a world with ever increasing age of people, diseases or conditions associated with ageing become more prevalent. Identifying these conditions and diseases early can give time to slow them down or even prevent them. While medication plays a role, diet and lifestyle should be the first measure taken when looking to prevent conditions like sarcopenia. Evidence suggests that protein could play a significant role in the diet of elderly people to maintain muscle mass and further functionality of those muscles. Older established recommendations on the average protein consumption per day seem to be outdated. Several studies suggest that the recommended amounts might not be sufficient to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. Protein metabolism shows changes in elderly compared to younger individuals and also chronic inflammation indicates higher protein needs. Further changes in food preference and reduced meal sizes can limit protein intake. Supplementing protein could have a beneficial effect due to its high concentration of protein for a relatively low amount of mass that needs to be consumed. Not all protein supplements are the same and the market offers a huge variety of products to choose from, but which is best suited for elderly? In this review the conditions of osteoporosis and sarcopenia are under investigation to see what the research has shown in the last 15 years, when it comes to supplementing protein.
