Abstract
Surgery is an extremely demanding field in Medicine and surgeons are subjected to an increased risk of developing different health problems. One of these diseases is the Chronic Venous Disorder (CVD), which is exacerbated by the particularly long working-hours, the increased number of hours standing-up in the operating room without the possibility to change positions, the decrease of time during the day that could be used for exercise or for techniques that could prevent the formation and/or development of CVD. This study was performed with the intent of discovering the prevalence and severity of CVD in Portuguese Surgeons from different surgical specialties. This is a research paper, in which a survey was created based on information collected from different books, e-journals, articles as well as from other online databases and later shared with 159 Portuguese surgeons from different surgical specialties. The associations and correlations studied show a strong statistical significance between the main categories. It was shown that an increase in the clinical classification of the CEAP criteria is directly proportionate to a bigger effect on the quality of life. Women were found not only to have a higher prevalence of CVD but also a bigger clinical significance of this pathology in comparison to men. A family history of CVD, as well as clinical history of hypertension and coronary artery disease, are directly linked with a bigger probability for developing CVD as well as to a higher severity of this pathology. The higher the CEAP and VCSS scores, the more protective measures are used and the higher is the number of treatments done. Surgeons reported the most relief of symptoms with the use of compression stockings, the elevation of legs and the use of venotropic medication.
