Abstract
A bachelor’s degree creative dissertation on “A documentary photographic story of the degraded landscape of Pārdaugava depicted in a zine” is developed based on theoretical knowledge about zines (homemade magazines) as a means of communication and documentary photography as a means of capturing reality. The project was developed through documentary urban photography. The zine “Pārdaugavas mājas un to pārdzīvotāji” was created with the author's photographs and quotes taken from interviews with residents of the degraded landscape of Pārdaugava. The dissertation consists of a theoretical part and a creative concept part. In the theoretical part, by studying the literature, knowledge about the characteristics of zines and their world and Latvian history is gained. The ambiguity of the concept of objectivity and its importance in photojournalism and journalism in general are discussed. The principles of urban photography as a sub-genre of documentary photography are explained. The concept part of the dissertation describes the process of developing a creative project (zine). The aim and the target audience of the work are explained. Several examples of good practice and inspiration for the author in the field of both zines and documentary photography are discussed. The principles of selecting zine photographs and quotes are explained. The creative work - a zine with six stories of Pārdaugava residents. In each story, photographs of a house together with quotes from its inhabitant give an opportunity to observe the process of reflection of this person and to identify with their feelings and emotions. Together, the six individual stories form a whole description of Pārdaugava as a district. The aim of the dissertation is to develop a zine about the degraded landscape of Pārdaugava based on theoretical knowledge about zines and their history, photojournalism, and documentary urban photography.
