Abstract
Title of the Study: The effectivness of interval training in improving physical functions in patients with Long Covid. Aim of the Study: To study the effectiveness of interval training in improving the physical functions - exercise tolerance, respiratory function, lower extremity strength - in patients with Long Covid. Methodology: The study included 20 subjects with Long Covid, 10 in the intervention group (IG) and 10 in the control group (KG). The intervention group performed supervised interval training 2x / week, 8 weeks. The control group received recommendations for physical activity, following the recommendations of the World Physiotherapy. All study participants were evaluated with outcome measures for exercise tolerance with a six-minute walk test (6MWT), respiratory function with spirometry, lower limb strength, and endurance with a 30-second sit to stand test, as well as with inflammatory and safety markers. Results: The distance walked at 6MWT improved significantly and equally in both groups: IG averaged 93.7 m (p = 0.001, d = 1.5); KG 80.1 m (p = 0.02; d = 0.96). The 30 sec., sit to stand test result was significantly improved only by IG (p <0.001, d = 1.95). Inhalation functional parameters also improved statistically significantly only in IG: maximal inspiratory flow (p = 0.01; d = 1.1) and forced inspiratory volume (p = 0.01; d = 1.1). Conclusions: The results of the study confirm the effectiveness of the used high-intensity interval training methodology in improving exercise tolerance, respiratory function and lower extremity muscle strength and endurance, as well as marked a downward trend in the significance of inflammatory severity. At the same time, the interval training methodology used showed optimal safety in the study sample in patients with Long Covid, confirming the safety of high-intensity interval training in relatively young or middle-aged adults with Long Covid.
